For most of its history, Marlborough House was a London residence for royal and aristocratic occupants until it became the Commonwealth Secretariat headquarters in 1965;. Originally designed by Sir Christopher Wren for Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough who secured a lease on the site adjoining St James’s Palace from her good friend, Queen Anne. During the course of the project, the Duchess fell out with Wren and supervised the completion of the house in 1711 herself. Visitors can view the fine rooms and learn about the history of the building and gardens.
