Simon Jenkins aptly describes this tower as a ‘palace in the sky’, with four floors of fine rooms stacked above each other.  Built between 1433 and 1443 in red brick, this striking tower dominates the landscape. The rooms have grand fireplaces built of Ancaster stone and are hung with tapestries, but are otherwise unfurnished.  The tower is surrounded by a moat which once also encompassed a castle that was knocked down over 100 years ago. From the top can be seen Lincoln Cathedral and the Boston Stump.   Equally massive and spectacular is Holy Trinity church in Tattershall. It is almost as sparsely furnished with no memorials or carvings, apart from a flock of angels in the roofs. It does however have some treasures – the fifteenth century glass in the east window and the pulpitum that divides the nave from the chancel. The combination of Ancaster stone and the perpendicular style results in a most beautiful building.

In the afternoon go to Gunby Hall, a place loved by James Lees-Milne (who did much to save many country houses in the fifties and sixties and whose diaries are a delight to read) who described this house as ‘An Augustan squire’s domain, robust, unostentatious, dignified and a trifle prim’. The house was built in 1700 and has a fine William and Mary faade. It also is built in red brick. There are portraits by Reynolds and Arthur Hughes and Victorian walled gardens.

The coach departs Norwich Notcutts at 8.30am [NR4 6QP] Dereham Tesco at 9am and King’s Lynn Ramada Inn [PE30 4NB] at 9.30am. We have permission to park cars at Notcutts and the Ramada Inn. Please park away from the main entrances. We may picnic in the grounds of Tattershall Castle and the church has a caf that sells sandwiches, rolls, cakes and drinks.

There will be a guided tour at Gunby Hall, but one is unlikely at Tattershall, though we are still negotiating
