Lytes Cary Manor is an enchanting medieval manor house with a Tudor Great Hall and 14th-century chapel. It was the home of the herbalist Henry Lyte and the garden still contains plants which were cultivated in his time. After a guided tour and garden walk have lunch at Montacute (own expense) or a picnic and then tour Montacute House (www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-montacute) which was built in 1601. The gardens are very fine and the interior has a collection of Tudor portraits on loan from the National Portrait Gallery. A curator from the NPG will take you around a selection of these and explain their history. The visit will last about 3 hrs which will allow time for a walk in the extensive grounds and a cup of tea (own expense).
