The garden tradition in Japan is one of the oldest in the world. Deeply rooted in an aesthetic that owes much to Chinese culture, it is nevertheless a powerful and profound artistic expression in its own right. In this lecture Robert Ketchell, author, landscape designer and Chairman of the Japanese Garden Society, unravels the aesthetic origins of the garden tradition which arise from an appreciation of landscape as a source of sacred language. Japanese garden designers have always sought to engage the imagination of the viewer as part of the fabric of the garden, seeing it as an artistic expression, rather than simply being a horticultural exercise.
