Hoveton House and Hoveton Hall

Hoveton House was built at the end of the seventeenth century for Thomas Blofeld MP and Mayor of Norwich and it has remained in the hands of the Blofeld family. Pevsner and Wilson  praise the house as ‘one of the most attractive, if not the most perfect of double-pile houses of its time in Norfolk.  It is a nave, but a most lovable design’. Inside there is a fine Staircase Hall, fine fireplaces, one of them possibly by Thomas Ivory, elegant carving, beautiful window surrounds and doorcases. There are unexecuted plans for the house by  Repton, but he laid out the gardens.  We visit by kind permission of Tom Blofeld, son of the judge and nephew of the cricket commentator. He has a young family and is introducing an air of informality to the house. He is also the owner of the Bewilderwood.
Hoveton Hall was built in 1809-12  by Humphry Repton. Although the plan is missing an alternative plan in the Italianate style for Hoveton Hall is dated 1809, and the cantilevered staircase with wrought iron balusters is very similar to another Repton House, Sheringham Hall. The South front is very attractive with a large central bow with, on each side, a pedimented Wyatt window flanked by Corinthium pilasters. Inside there are many columns and pilasters. The gardens cover 15 acres and include a walled herbaceous garden and a walled kitchen garden.

If you wish to picnic there are some nice areas near the river in Wroxham.  Go straight across at the A1151 and then left by the station.  Almost immediately turn right into Roy’s car park.  Walk away from the road and you will find the river.  Light lunches are available in the Tearoom at Hoveton Hall Gardens.  The current menu includes Quiche with salad, Ploughman’s lunch, Filled rolls with salad, homemade soup and large sausage roll with salad, but it may change before the visit.  All are moderately priced at less than 5.

Due at Hoveton Hall at 2.15pm
