Matthew Winterbottom, Curator of Decorative Art at the Holbourne Museum, will lead this walk. Following Queen Anne’s visits in 1702-1703, Bath became de rigeur for fashionable society. Shops selling silks, lace, porcelain, trinkets, jewellery and other luxuries soon appeared to tempt these wealthy and demanding visitors. Bath’s shops were soon renowned throughout the country and were second only to London’s West End. This walk will include areas of the city that were once the sites of these glittering shops and Matthew will explain how the city’s shopping areas developed and changed as the city expanded.
