The Old Palace, Croydon, is now a girls’ school, but
was once a regular haunt of monarchs such as Elizabeth I. For over five
centuries it was a country residence of the Archbishops of Canterbury, and the
last stop for the Archbishop and his entourage before reaching Lambeth Palace.
The building dates from the late 14th century and includes a banqueting hall
which is one of the outstanding medieval great halls of London. Visitors learn
the history of the building on a special guided tour.
