Chloe Cockerill, Regional Development Manager for the Churches Conservation Trust, will be your guide to a selection of churches some 10 miles north west of Norwich. Start at Salle where you may leave cars on the green in front of the church. Here board a coach and head off for churches at Thurning [pulpit, box pews, sanctuary panelling and altar rail originally installed in Corpus Christi College Cambridge], Little Witchingham [14th Century wall paintings with symbols of the evangelists, St George, the story of the Passion and the Resurrection], Booton [eclectic and astonishing creation of a nineteenth century vicar – very naughty, but built in the right spirit – according to Edwin Lutyens], Cawston [Magnificent hammer-beam roof, screen with its original doors and painted saints and wall paintings] and Salle [wonderful early fifteenth century church with the best of eveything that century produced – font, bench ends, angel roof and lovely glass].
Salle is on the B1145 between Bawdeswell and Aylsham. The junction for Salle lies between Reepham and Cawston and occurs at a very sharp bend in the road. Take first left along this minor road.
The village hall in Salle will be open for comfort stops.
