The Francis Haskell Memorial Lecture 2009
One of the most distinguished art historians of his generation,
Francis Haskell was Professor of Art History at Oxford and a member of The Art
Fund’s Committee from 1976 until his death in 2000. This year, the annual
lecture in his memory is given by Professor Deborah Howard.
Good Citizenship: Venetian Cittadini as Patrons of the Arts
A specialist in the art and architecture of Venice, Deborah Howard is a former pupil of Francis Haskell and a life-long admirer of his work. Her lecture develops some of the themes that Haskell himself discussed in Patrons and Painters, his pioneering study of patronage of Italian Baroque art.
