In the early 14th century the Popes were forced by political circumstances to desert their spiritual home in Rome for Avignon in the south of France. They remained there for almost sixty years, enduring what became known as the Bablyonish Captivity. As a result Avignon swarmed with popes, Cardinals, merchants and craftsmen, who commissioned and produced some of the finest examples of the 14th century art and architecture. Lecture given by dr Sally Dormer.
