Hartland Abbey and Docton Mill
- Hartland Abbey |
Docton Mill Gardens are set in a North Devon Valley leading to the sea and
contain several spectacular garden areas including a 140 metre long border, wild
flower garden and superb bog garden. There is an award winning tea room and an
extensive plant sales area. Due to the undulating pathways the gardens are not
suitable for wheelchairs and people with walking difficulties.
Hartland Abbey and gardens is close to Docton Mill and is the home of the Stucley family The Abbey contains many important and interesting items collected by the family during the 400 years they have been in occupation. The gardens were originally started by Augustinian Monks in 1157 AD and have been altered and extended through the years since. The Abbey and Gardens featured in the recent television series Sense and Sensibility and it is possible to walk to Barton Cottage by the seashore. Devon cream teas are provided by the ladies from the local church.
