View: The Lure of the East: British Orientalist Painting
This is the first exhibition devoted exclusively to the ways that British artists experienced and portrayed the Near and Middle East during a period of increased travel and discovery from 1830-1930.
The Lure of the East will explore the complex and dynamic responses of British artists to the cultures and landscapes of the Near and Middle East, offering vital historical and cultural perspectives on the 'Orient'. It will also consider Orientalist painting as it exists in the world today, in the context of wide-ranging contemporary critical debates, and raise questions about artists' encounters with the realities of the region and its cultures.
