During the crusades, beautifully crafted Islamic objects of a quality and richness never seen before in the West began to arrive in quantities in Europe. These goods created a huge demand for exotic Oriental imports and eventually gave rise to local industries that sought to emulate these luxury wares, giving an enormous boost to craft industries and the development of skill and techniques.

Renate Dohmen, Acting Programme Director of the World Art and Artefacts Programme, Birkbeck College, will trace developments in various media, ranging from glass and metalware to textiles and the pictorial arts.
