Lecture: Medieval Sexualities

According to one clichéed view, the Middle Ages was an era of repression, when bodily joy was fiercely prohibited. As this talk illustrates, the truth was more complicated. Sex in art and the art of sex are explored in a medieval context, and thoughts and ideas about people's sexual identity are brought into view. John Arnold teaches at the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at Birkbeck, and has a particular interest in gender and sexuality in medieval England and Europe.
