Early Christian art derived its symbolic language from the Graeco-Roman and Egyptian traditions. The early icons of the 6th and 7th centuries incorporate the wisdom of early Christian theology and the discipline of contemplative prayer. In his lecture, icon expert Richard Temple will analyse the origins of the icon and the development of its sacred imagery.

Study visit: Demonstration of Byzantine and Russian icon-painting techniques

Annie Shaw, a trained artist and founder of the Fellowship of Saint Luke, is a practitioner of icon painting in the style of the Prosopon School. She will demonstrate traditional Byzantine/Russian icon-painting techniques, where egg tempera is used on gessoed boards to create a particular transfigured effect. The demonstration session will be accompanied by a short talk explaining the spiritual message and aspirations behind the creation of icons.
