Image of the Buddha: From Gandhara to Japan

The Buddhist iconography originating from India was introduced to Japan in the 6th century AD via China and Korea. In this lecture, Dr Meri Arichi will trace the fascinating journey of the image of the buddha along the Silk Route, and examine the development of Buddhist art that appealed to the Japanese aesthetic sensibility. Meri Arichi is currently a sessional lecturer at Birkbeck, University of London, and also teaches Japanese Art History for the British Museum's Asian Art Diploma course.
