France has been a key centre for the development of photography since the very beginnings of the art form. One of the major strands of French photography is the humanist tradition, which has found its expression in the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Doisneau, Willy Ronis and many others. Founded on observation, humanist photography has had a profound influence on the way we see the world around us and has often been deliberately selective in the ways that it presents France to the world. Paul Ryan has written and lectured widely on aspects of photography and the cinema.
