ARTIST ROOMS: Vija Celmins

The New Art Gallery Walsall

2 February – 6 May 2018

Discover the work of Latvian-American artist Vija Celmins, whose explorations of the natural environment span sea and sky.

Vija Celmins, Night Sky 3, 2002

Drawn from the ARTIST ROOMS collection, this exhibition of work by New York-based artist Vija Celmins is one of three displays at The New Art Gallery Walsall to present contemporary artists who explore the theme of physical or psychological wilderness.

Celmins’ densely layered drawings and prints engage with the natural world, from the surface of the ocean to expanses of desert, spider’s webs to night skies. Her images prompt questions around representation, perception and human experience and remind us of the complexity of the simplest things that can be observed in nature.
