Things to do: Bristol in one day

Stuck for time in Bristol? We've mapped out a route of the best cultural places to visit.

1

M Shed

10am: start your cultural day in Bristol at M Shed at the city's historic dockside. The museum, a former 1950s transit shed, is dedicated to telling the amazing history of the city through objects and stories.

2

Arnolfini

11.30am: afterwards, take a four minute walk to Arnolfini, an interdisciplinary contemporary arts space housed in a repurposed 19th-century warehouse. While you're there, why not enjoy lunch at the museum cafe bar, where you'll find a selection of local foods?

3

The Red Lodge Museum

  • Bristol
  • Free to all

1.30pm: next, walk approximately 14 minutes via Colston Street to The Red Lodge Museum, often described as Bristol's 'hidden treasure' because of its magnificent Tudor rooms. Please note, the museum is closed on Wednesday to Friday for the rest of this year.

4

Bristol Museum & Art Gallery

3pm: take a six minute stroll to Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, home to a significant collection of international importance. The neoclassical building was designed by Sir Charles Robert Cockerell in 1823.

5

Royal West of England Academy

4pm: final stop is Royal West of England Academy, Bristol's first art gallery. Recent exhibitions have included the work of Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin as well as UK stalwarts such as Mary Fedden.
