Navigating the Art Market course

We are delighted to be offering fully-funded places on this course which aims to develop a practical understanding of the art market.

Navigating the Art Market, in partnership with Sotheby's Institute of Art, promotes a practical understanding of the art market through a combination of online sessions and a one-day seminar held at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London, with spaces fully funded by Art Fund and Sotheby’s Institute of Art partnership.

When: Seminar day on 23 February 2018
Where: Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London
Who: Early career curators interested in gaining a practical understanding of the art market and more experienced curators wishing to refresh their knowledge

Cost: Fully-funded (including lunch)

Online sessions will be available for course participants to access at any time in the four weeks preceding the seminar course and for one month after. The seminar in London will offer an opportunity to review online material, network with curators and art world experts as well as offering insight into the workings of the auction house Sotheby’s.

Topics will include:

  • An overview and introduction to the art market
  • A brief introduction to art law and due diligence checks
  • Tax incentives to facilitate acquisitions for public benefit
  • Guidance on how to buy at auction
  • How galleries, dealers, art fairs and collectors operate
  • How to network in the art world

Although this course is fully-funded, transportation to/from the seminar in London is not included. If you or your organisation cannot cover the travel costs, please contact us to discuss this further.


Applications are open to museum and gallery professionals, but curators and others who work with public collections will be prioritised.
