Fox was the leading Whig of his generation and features in many of GillrayÂ’s most important prints.

Gillray went to the gallery of the House of Commons from time to time and perhaps drew this sketch there. This drawing allows the museum to explain to visitors how Gillray worked and can be used in conjunction with sketchbooks by contemporary cartoonists such as Steve Bell to draw out parallels between Georgian caricaturists and contemporary cartoonists.

Provenance

The estate of Tony Banks, the late Lord Stratford.
