This is the finest Herculaneum service known to survive and the painting is attributed to Samuel Williams. The continuous painted scenes of rural landscapes are different on every piece, and no scene or figure is repeated. They include scenes with travelers, soldiers and country folk with various domestic animals and may represent a jouney from Liverpool to London. The pottery was based in Mersey and National Museums Liverpool has the best collection of Herculaneum ceramics.
Sothebys, 1972; private collection; Sotheby's, 2006; Roderick Jellicoe.
