An early preparatory work for the artist's best-known painting, 'Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach' of 1885.

This was one of the first paintings made by Forbes after his arrival in the Cornish art colony of Newlyn in January 1884. It has the hallmarks of plein-air, square brush painting that characterised the work of the core Newlyn artists. He wrote: anything more beautiful than this beach at low water I never saw...if I can only paint figures against such a background as this shining mirror-like shore...

Provenance

The artist; Geoffrey (1889-1970) and Jill Garnier (1890-1966); by descent to Mark Garnier.
