This ring is likely to be English and consists of a flat band with an applied, beaded border and a double lined inscription.

It may have been the treasured property of Staffordshire nobility as it was found near Chartley Hall and Chartley Castle and bears an inscription in French, the language of the English aristocracy. The inscription reads 'Amour vault tout fors ceur de villain Amour envoie coullas e joie' (Love is worth much more than a base heart Love sends [or brings] solace and joy).

Provenance

Discovered in Stowe, Staffordshire by a metal detectorist and declared Treasure in 2005.
