This dramatic scene shows the historically important 'Original' lifeboat - the first purpose-built lifeboat anywhere, which was based at South Shields.

The boat is manned by South Shields' Tyne pilots who wear distinctive headgear. A large, rare watercolour by Luke Clennell, a significant North-East artist whose career was cut short by illness.
