This is a rare example of a Windsor chair by a known maker.

It is one of only four attributed to Pitt, the maker of the earliest maker labelled Windsor chair, and the only one currently in a public collection. The only other known 18th century Windsor maker labelled chair, by Richard Hewett of Slough, is in private ownership. It is also significant as it retains its painted and decorated finish. This includes the coat of arms of the City of Bath and it is thought that it may originally have been commissioned by the Corporation of Bath.

Provenance

David Swanson Antiques, Petworth; MIchael Harding-Hill, Chipping Norton.
