Leone Leoni was condemned to the papal galleys in 1540 after a fight with the papal jeweller and only released after the intervention of Andrea Doria, a powerful prince in Genoa.

Leoni produced a series of three plaquettes and five medals to commemorate his debt to Doria as liberator and patron including this plaquette.
