The Whitworth Art Gallery's holdings of British drawings and watercolours can be ranked, in importance if not in size, alongside the university collections in Oxford and Cambridge.

The Laurence Harbottle Gift extends the Whitworth's existing holdings of the work of Brabazon, Cox and Holland, which are already quite extensive. Thomas Daniell exhibited at the Royal Academy from the mid-1770s to the early 1780s. ln 1784 he decided to travel with his orphaned nephew William to India, where they worked as engravers. This pair of etchings is from their Oriental Scenery series.
