A large dish from a spectacular maiolica service made to commemorate the marriage of Alfonso II d'Este, Duke of Ferrara in 1579.

The centre of the dish features a painting of a boar hunt after an engraving by Johannes Stradanus which itself was based on a painting by Marten de Vos. A maiolica service was less expensive than silver but still prestigious, and was intended more for display than regular use.

Provenance

Made to commemorate the marriage of Alfonso II d'Este, Duke of Ferrara and Margherita Gonzaga in 1579; ... possible German collection...; Sotheby's, 1986; Bonham's, 2004.
