This watercolour was produced during Ravilious' stay at Capel-y-ffin in the Black Mountains of Brecknockshire.

In a letter to Helen Binyon, Ravilious mentioned how he had enjoyed painting a waterwheel made out of chunks of wood and petrol-tins by the farmer's son and mentioned the four geese, which he described as a bit Chinese.
