John Towneley (1697-1782) was the third son of Charles Towneley and Ursula Fermor, the owners of Towneley Hall.

A rival of Maurice-Quentin de la Tour, Jean-Baptiste Perronneau was one of the great French 18th century pastellists. He has depicted Towneley wearing the Order of St Louis. Towneley Hall was the home of the Catholic Towneley Family from the fourteenth century.
