This is a view of Dumbarton with its castle and the distant Ben Lomond taken from the southern bank of the Clyde.

It is unusual due to its depiction of the early industrial development of this part of the Clyde, and the smoking glass furnaces of the town of Dumbarton are a recognisable intrusion into the otherwise wild landscape.

Acquired by James Watt from the artist's studion in 1817; then by descent.
