The work addresses two burning issues of the day: the Crimean war and the plight of agricultural workers.

Collinson portrays a labourer sitting in a pub, tankard in hand, contemplating joining the 'Army Works Corps'. The corps was formed in 1854 to encourage rural workers and navvies to volunteer as civilians in the Crimean war.
