These monumental vases are made of papier-mache, inlaid with mother-of-pearl and mounted in ormolu.

They imitate porcelain and lacquer and their elegant shapes derive from Kangxi porcelain. These vases show the revival of the taste for mounting both porcelain and lacquer in rich gilt bronze mounts.

Almost certainly acquired by Isabella Marchioness of Hertford for Temple Newsam, circa 1830; given to Hon Frederick Meynell for Hoar Cross, Staffs, circa 1904; Christie's, 1999; Partridge Fine Arts.
