The medium and the poses are consciously after Michelangelo, who Richmond admired greatly.

The style may have been taken from drawings by Michelangelo that the artist had seen in the collection of the President of the Royal Academy. Richmond used J. Boswood as a model for the legs and often used him as a model for his work.

Provenance

By descent in the family of the artist.
