A conversation piece which depicts the English guards setting out to protect London from the threat of Bonnie Prince Charlie.

The Young Pretender had landed in Scotland and marched as far south as Derby. The English guards are assembling at Tottenham Court Road Turnpike before proceeding north past the village of Finchley. This work was acquired with assistance from the Wolfson Foundation.

The artist disposed of the painting by lottery, he donated half the tickets to the Foundling Hospital, who had the winning ticket. The Foundling Hospital is now known as the Coram Family.
