The subject of this painting was Gilbert Cannan (1884-1955) writer and dramatic critic.

Cannan lived in a converted mill house at Cholesbury in Hertfordshire and the portrait was painted during visits from 1915-16. The large black and white dog to the right hand side of Cannan was Porthos. He originally belonged to J M Barrie who used him as the model for 'Nana' in Peter Pan. Cannan married Barrie's wife.
