This bequest of eight paintings from the collection of Mrs Sarah McLeod through the Art Fund in 2001 complements and extends the Harris Museum and Art Gallery's 20th-century collection.

Both Smith and Jack Butler Yeats are represented by paintings from the 1920s, when their art was undergoing a transition. By 1925, Yeats was moving away from realism and brightening his palette, as can be seen in the almost abstract Coast of C1a.re from Dun Aengus.
