This bequest of eight paintings from the collection of Mrs Sarah McLeod through the Art Fund in 2001 complements and extends the Harris Museum and Art Gallery's 20th-century collection.

The purples, blues and acid greens of Matthew Smith's brooding, expressionist Pont-Aven Landscape are more usually associated with his Cornish paintings of 1920. In contrast, the explosion of impulsive brushstrokes and hot, saturated reds, to be found in Roses in a Vase, show him at his most characteristic.
