The handle is formed from a squatting human.
He is holding a large metal banded wood barrel to his lips. The bowl is supported by a large superbly carved turtle. Almost certainly created among the Northern Iroquoian-speaking peoples.

Acquired by previous owner at an antiques fair in 1998.
