The body of this tankard is covered with a separate 'sleeve', elaborately and skilfully chased and pierced with foliage and music-making putti.

The case thumbpiece is in the form of a grotesque mask.

Thomas Savory, by whom presented to Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex; his sale (C, 22/6/1843, lot 589); reacquired by Savory. By descent until sold (C 9/11/1994, lot 210) and purchased by vendor.
