Lonsdale was a painter of genre subjects and landscapes.

His domestic interiors are characterised by a meticulous technique inspired by Dutch genre painting of the 17th century. This painting is particularly interesting in that it accurately depicts, on a large scale, the drawing room of Whittington Hall shortly after it was completed in 1836. More importantly, it is a unique record of a room splendidly furnished by the well-known cabinet-making firm of Gillows of Lancaster

Provenance

Commissioned by Thomas Greene for his newly built residence, Whittington Hall, by descent through family to Lady Lichfield who sold the house to the Greenwood family.
