A needlework carpet depicting the Roman mosaic from Stonesfield, Oxfordshire.

The mosaic was destroyed soon after its discovery in the eighteenth century. Probably a domestic production piece which may been designed by a professional.

Provenance

Probably commissioned by John Strachey F.R.S. (1671-1742), who travelled all over the country visiting local historical societies and investigating records. The work has been in the Strachey family until its acquisition by Jonathan Harris.
