Thomas was the only son of a wealthy Farnham dignitary.

He is depicted wearing the fashionable attire of a gentleman: brown wool coat, elaborately embroidered silk waistcoat, and cambric or linen shirt. He carries a three-cornered hat under one arm and holds a silver-topped cane. In his buttonhole there is a sprig of summer jasmine. Stephen Elmer owned the building which now houses the Museum of Farnham.
