Portrait of Jane Hardman (1702-1795), daughter of George Leigh of Oughterington, Cheshire.

In 1732 she married James Hardman who, with his brother John, had just purchased Allerton Hall, near Liverpool. When this portrait was painted she was one of the wealthiest people in Lancashire, principally through her questionable appropriation of the remaining half-share in the Allerton Hall estate from her late husband's brother.

Provenance

The sitter; Sir Hardman Earle, 1st Bt; by descent to Sir Hardman George Earle; Leger Galleries.
