Allingham moved to Witley near Godalming during the 1880s and developed a friendship with Gertrude Jekyll, the famous garden designer, who lived in Godalming.

Jekyll invited Allingham to paint her own garden at Munstead Wood which she did several times. In this watercolour, the detail is so accurate that almost every plant variety can be recognised and it stands as an important contemporary record of Jekyll's colour planting schemes.
