The silk is from Spital fields, London. It has a flush pattern to the ground, and is brocaded with sprigs of coloured flowers.
Probably worn by Mary Flaxman. Her daughter Elizabeth (b.1749) married John Spurrell (B.1732). The mantua was in the possession of the Spurrell family,Thurgarten House, Norfolk, until auctioned at Christies in 1994.
