George Ill's architect took a keen interest in the furnishing of houses he designed.

His few surviving designs for objects of furniture are of the greatest interest in the history of classical taste, but few of his interiors have survived. The design and decoration of the frame is typical of Chambers' style and reflects his preference for Franco-Roman influences in his interpretation of the antique taste. The legs echo, in shape although not in decoration, the legs of a chair which Chambers drew during his travels in France between 1749 and 1755 and which he used as the inspiration of his design for the President's chair for the Royal Society of Arts.
