Lowry uses subtle sombre greens, red browns, sooty black and off-white to portray the atmosphere of a milltown, of which Preston is an archetypal example.

Dickens, in 'Hard Times', used Preston, with its countless black smoking chimneys fuelling the mills as his model for Coketown.
