Hamilton was one of the earliest exponents of the conversation piece in Britain along with Hogarth, Bartholomew Dandridge and Charles Phillips.

This depiction of the bourgeois Rawson family resembles early examples of Hogarth's conversation pieces. The Rawson family were of a similar social standing to Henry Peckham, the builder of Pallant House and the decorations and furnishings in the work are almost identical to those of the dining room at Pallant House.

By descent in the Rawson Family to Sir Alfred Cooper Rawson: with Leger Galleries since 1983.
